Another reboot for FOX’s American Idol is underway and the drama continues on who will be sitting side by side at the judges table for Season 13.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Idol team is narrowing down its contenders, and the names may sound too familiar. Reportedly, Jennifer Lopez, who was a commendable judge for seasons 10 and 11, is at the top of the list. The only problem now is, of course, money. While on Idol, Lopez earned an estimated $15 million per season, while her successor, Mariah Carey, got $3 million more than that. Reports say that J.Lo‘s manager, Benny Medina, is asking for a raise.
Keith Urban, who judged just last season, is set to return for another round of judging. Meanwhile, the show might add Will.i.am, who was a judge for the U.K version of The Voice. Will.i.am is still undecided on whether to continue with his Voice gig or crossover to Idol. Dr. Luke, a pop hit-maker (Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”) and newly minted label head (his Kemosabe Records is a joint-venture with Sony Music), was also in the running, but a source says Idol has cooled on him.
There were also persisting rumors that they would make an all-Idol alum panel that would consist of Adam Lambert, Jennifer Hudson, and Kelly Clarkson. The rumors may not be true, but Hudson was rumored to be close to finalizing a deal and is still in the running.
So what do you guys think? Well, I think it’s not about putting famous personalities into the mix, but the judges panel must include variety, like a showbiz mogul or an industry producer, plus an alum, and then a singer. The all-alum idea is a bad one, and I think will.i.am is a media whore. I hope that the final changes and decisions the production will help their sagging performance of the show in the ratings game.
