This came as a shocker. One of my favorite actors, if not THE best character actor of this generation, Academy Award Winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his apartment in Greenwich Village, New York City on 2 February. He was 46.
According to CNN, the police reports noted that he died of an apparent drug overdose.
Police said Hoffman, 46, was found on the bathroom floor and pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators found two bags of what is believed to be heroin inside the fourth-floor apartment, law enforcement officials said.
Hoffman was last seen alive at 8 p.m. Saturday, a law enforcement official said. He was expected to get his children on Sunday, but didn’t show up, the official said.Playwright David Katz and another person went to the apartment and found him dead, the official said.
A needle was in the actor’s left arm, and eight empty glassine-type bags that usually contain heroin were found in the apartment, law enforcement sources told CNN.
The bags were stamped with “Ace of Hearts” and “Ace of Spades” — street names for the heroin, the sources said.
I just could not believe that with all of the achievements and success he has received in his entire career by his peers in the business that he would end his life like this. In an interview with “60 Minutes,” he revealed that he had given up drugs and alcohol many years earlier. But last year, he checked into a rehabilitation program for about 10 days after a reliance on prescription pills resulted in his briefly turning again to heroin. This is a realization that drug addiction can only do you wrong.
Hoffman made his debut on the big screen via Scent of a Woman and since then he had been cast in roles that were dark, dense, complicated, and nothing short three-dimensional.
Hoffman won an Academy Award in 2006 for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role in the film “Capote,” in which he portrayed the author Truman Capote.
He was also nominated for the Academy Award for Actor in a Supporting Role three times for his scene-stealing roles, one in the 2012 film “The Master,” in the 2008 film “Doubt,” and the 2007 film “Charlie Wilson’s War.” He also recently had a role in the hugely popular “The Hunger Games” films as the unpredictable Game Maker Plutarch Heavensbee. Reportedly he only had 7 days of shooting for the franchise’s final film, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2,” but now that he is gone, the production has yet to come up with a statement.
He also starred in several critically-acclaimed movies like The Talented Mr. Ripley (one of my favorite movies of all time), Patch Adams, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Moneyball. He is truly brilliant in whatever he’s done and he is definitely a big loss for the movie industry. Hollywood is an infinitely less-interesting place without this highly versatile A-lister.
If you want to pursue a career in acting, look up to his body of work and I tell you, you will be inspired to do better. Rest In Peace Mr. Hoffman, you are truly a Master of the screen.
He is back! After two straight losses, one of which arguably the most devastating loss of his professional boxing career, pound-for-pound Welterweight champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao dominated over former world champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios with a unanimous decision at a sold out Venetian Macao’s Cotai Arena in Macao, China. Pacman claimed a powerful victory on all three judges’ cards (120-108. 119-109, 118-110).
Manny did not just outbox Rios, he certainly outclassed him. Pacquiao took control of the fight from the get-go, leaving Rios with a cut over his both eyes by round seven. Rios can’t seem to solve Pacquiao’s impeccable foot work, tough counter-punching, heavy combinations and fighting style that he mostly trailed behind him in all twelve rounds. Knocking Rios down would have been a nice finish, but Pacquiao was content in punishing Rios by, well, flat-out beating him up.
After the fight, Rios discussed his loss by saying, “I fought one of the greatest boxers in the world besides Mayweather. The speed just got to me. I had fast sparring partners, but I think he was faster than them.”
I’m still in shock right now. ‘Glee’ star Cory Montieth was found dead at Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel, he was 31.
Glee star Cory Monteith has died, several news sources are reporting, but an official announcement has not been made.
Late night Twitter reports suggesting Cory Monteith has died in a Vancouver hotel room of an apparent drug overdose have circulated on several usually credible feeds, suggesting the news is not part of a Twitter death hoax.

Anderson Silva didn’t take Chris Weidman seriously, and he paid dearly for it. Weidman knocked Silva out in the second round to become the new UFC middleweight champion.
My two cents? That came as a shocker, but if you do not want to respect your opponent and the sport, the sport will fight back and will bite your a*s.
This is one heartbreaking news. 😦
For the first time in its 30-year history, Canadian-based, animal-free troupe Cirque du Soleil experienced its onstage fatality. Sarah Guyard-Guillot fell from a height of approximately 50-feet to her death during the final moments of the circus’ popular Ka production staged at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Guyard-Guillot, a 31 year old French native and a mother of two, has been with the Ka Las Vegas production since it started in 2004 and had spent more than 22 years as an acrobatic performer.
Guy Laliberte, Cirque du Soleil founder, said in an official statement posted on Facebook that he was devastated by the tragic accident:
“I am heartbroken. I wish to extend my sincerest sympathies to the family. We are all completely devastated with this news. Sassoon was an artist with the original cast of ‘Ka’ since 2006 and has been an integral part of our Cirque du Soleil tight family. We are reminded, with great humility and respect, how extraordinary our artists are each and every night. Our focus now is to support each other as a family,”
Performances of Ka have been cancelled until further notice, the statement said. My heart goes out to Sarah’s family and to the whole Cirque du Soleil team.
During the E3 mega-event, Sony has announced its Playstation 4 console formally to the public! Let’s take a closer look at the design of the newest console:
Pretty sleek huh? Following the official release of Microsoft’s XBOX One, which mainly focused on being the next generation Smart TV with high regards to copyright, ownership and internet connection policies, wherein the gamer must have a constant internet connection in order to play in full capacity, Sony takes a different turn with jabs that go directly to its competition.
Aside for the slur of different games and titles announced such as Final Fantasy 15 (Yes!), Kingdom Hearts 3 (OH YES!), Assassin’s Creed 4, Infamous: Second Son, and Uncharted 4 (YES YES and YES!), Playstation 4 will allow lending, reselling, trading, with no authentications, no restrictions and/or online requirements. That means, all disc-based games are not needed to be connected online for authentications. AMAZING.
And to add insult to injury, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios has revealed that Playstation will be REGION-FREE, meaning, all games from all over the world can be purchased and played on any console, any where. This contrasts earlier reports that XBOX One console will be region-locked.
How about the price? Well, PS4 would cost $399 (with 500GB hard drive), that’s a hundred dollars cheaper than XBOX One. Now that’s a knock-out.
